The latter marked her first of many collaborations with director Yorgos Lanthimos. She won two Academy Awards for Best Actress for her roles as an aspiring actress in the romantic musical La La Land (2016) and a resurrected suicide victim in Lanthimos' comic fantasy Poor Things (2023). She also portrayed tennis player Billie Jean King in Battle of the Sexes (2017) and the title role in Cruella (2021).
